Upon your recent appointment as Chairperson of Barton Health’s Board of Directors, Barton Memorial Hospital’s union nurses requested a meeting with you to discuss the issues they face on the front line of patient care. Without any explanation, you rejected that meeting.

Barton’s Board of Directors continues to disrespect nurses and ignore their burgeoning concerns about patient safety.

Currently, at the expense of patients’ best interests, the Board of Directors remains inflexible on matters of basic union needs. The Board is utilizing an expensive union-busting law firm that is refusing to negotiate in good faith. This has caused significant nurse turnover at Barton, which has led to short-staffing and apprehension about an increasingly precarious work environment.

During a global pandemic that has caused nurses and other essential workers to put their lives at risk to care for their community, Barton Health is holding needed improvements to patient advocacy and working conditions hostage to their apparent belief that these dedicated professionals are expendable. Nurses are not expendable.
