AG Formella: Stop the Sale of CMC to HCA!

Dear Attorney General John Formella:

As nurses, health care workers, patients, and citizens, we are writing to urge you to reject the sale of Catholic Medical Center (CMC) to HCA Healthcare, the wealthiest hospital corporation in the world. If this sale is allowed to go through, we are confident HCA will continue its business strategy of maximizing profits through market consolidation, raising prices, and cutting vital services.

The proposed transaction is a bad deal for patients, healthcare workers, and communities throughout New Hampshire. If the sale is allowed to go through, HCA will become the largest provider in the Manchester area, greatly enhancing HCA’s market power and further concentrating healthcare. This is troubling news for New Hampshire’s patients; research shows highly concentrated markets often result in higher costs and lower quality of care.

Across the country, HCA is infamous for cutting essential healthcare services in the name of boosting their already lucrative profits, including maternity services, or in some cases all non-emergency services. And right here in New Hampshire, HCA has already made its acquire and cut strategy known. Soon after buying Frisbie Hospital, HCA shuttered its labor and delivery department despite agreeing to continue services for at least five years. Within a year of taking over the hospital, 12 out of the 14 primary care physicians at Frisbie resigned citing cuts in staffing and contract issues. Just last year, Frisbie received a $102,660 fine by CMS for violating the federal government’s price transparency laws.

We believe it is clear—the sale of CMC to HCA is not in the best interest of New Hampshire’s residents. Please reject this sale, so HCA is not allowed to inflict its profit-first agenda on more patients.
