Urge Members of Congress to Prevent Workplace Violence Against Health Care Workers!

Dear Representative and Senators,

I am writing to you today about critical legislation that would protect health care workers and patients from violence in health care settings.

Health care and social service workers have some of the most dangerous jobs in the United States – they are nearly five times more likely to experience injuries due to workplace violence than any other profession. According to a February 2024 NNU survey, eight in 10 nurses (81.6 percent) have experienced at least one type of workplace violence within the past year. Nearly half of nurses (45.5 percent) reported an increase in workplace violence on their unit in the previous year.

The Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act (S. 1232/ H.R. 2531) would mandate employers develop and implement a comprehensive workplace violence prevention plan to protect health care and social service workers.

I urge you to sign on as a cosponsor, commit to passing this critical legislation immediately, and urge leadership to bring it up for a vote as soon as possible.

The reintroduction of the bill comes at a time when nurses and hospital staff are facing an epidemic of violence. Just this year, nurses and hospital staff have been violently attacked at UPMC Memorial in Pennsylvania, HCA Florida Palms West Hospital, and HCA Florida Fawcett Hospital. Many more incidents go unreported or are pushed aside by hospital management.
