More than 400 nurses have died during the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic is not over, and frontline workers continue to work without the protections we need.

We need an emergency temporary OSHA standard for the strongest occupational safety and health protections for nurses and other frontline workers. If we’d had this standard a year ago, many of our fallen colleagues might still be alive.

We call on the Biden administration to issue an emergency temporary OSHA standard for the strongest occupational safety and health protections for nurses and other frontline workers. The pandemic is not over, and frontline workers continue to work without the protections we need.

We applaud President Biden for scaling up our vaccination program, for passing the American Rescue Plan, and for his recent decision to support a waiver of certain patent rights for Covid-19 vaccines and treatments at the World Trade Organization, which will help fight the global pandemic in low and middle income countries. But in order to contain the pandemic at home, his administration must end the delays and immediately issue the OSHA emergency temporary standard.

While the vaccination program is important and nurses support it wholeheartedly, we will not end the pandemic with vaccinations alone. They need to be supplemented by mitigation methods, including the OSHA emergency temporary standard, which will protect frontline workers so hospitals don’t contribute to the spread of the virus.
