Our community is suffering immensely from Covid-19. That is why I am writing to you today to urge you to keep UCLA Health’s recently acquired Olympia Medical Center open.

This is not the time to shutter a 200-bed hospital like Olympia. This is exactly when we need our hospitals to commit to caring for our patients and making sure everyone has a fair chance of making it out of this pandemic alive.

Public health officials recently announced that the average number of Latino patients dying from Covid-19 each day in Los Angeles has increased more than 1,000 percent since November. Nearly a quarter of the patients who use the Olympia emergency department are Latino. How can we allow this hospital to close when so many of the patients it serves are facing such enormous health risks?

The closure of Olympia during this historic, unprecedented public health emergency will cause further hardship and undoubtedly lead to unnecessary death. The closure would place even more pressure on surrounding facilities at a time when those facilities are overburdened, and it is an irresponsible thing to do.

UCLA Health claims to be committed to healing humankind and alleviating suffering. We desperately need you to live up to that commitment right now. Delay the shutdown and commit to maintaining Olympia as a full-service acute care hospital with no suspension of services, at least for the duration of the Covid-19 pandemic. Thank you.
