Nurses are patient advocates, and when we see our hospital shirking its responsibility to our patients, we must stand up and speak out.

Right now, Kaiser Los Angeles Medical Center has a staffing crisis. We have seen more than 50 nurses leave our hospital in the last year — and we currently have 140 nurse positions open.

We are going on strike to protest management’s failure to respect and value nurses by providing us with the appropriate resources and staff. Management must stop prioritizing profits over patients and community. Kaiser must act now to recruit and retain experienced nurses and increase staffing throughout the hospital.

I am writing to express my support for Kaiser Los Angeles Medical Center nurses going on strike to stand up for their patients and themselves.

Management has failed nurses, patients, and our community by neglecting to provide RNs with the appropriate resources and staff. More than 50 nurses have left our community’s hospital in the last year, and there are currently 140 nurse positions open.

This is a staffing crisis — but the hospital is failing to recruit nurses because short staffing continues to create dire working conditions for RNs and potentially unsafe conditions for patients. Management has not prioritized the safety of either nurses or patients at LAMC.

Nurses must feel safe at their workplace so they can provide a safe, healing environment for their patients.

However, nurses are being pressured to care for too many patients, putting patient safety in jeopardy. If nurses are assigned too many patients, they cannot give patients the care they deserve.

Right now, Kaiser LAMC desperately needs nurses who can work with some of our community’s most vulnerable patients: Nurses who care for children in peds, PICU, and NICU as well as periop and ICU nurses.

As a concerned community member, I urge you to work with Kaiser LAMC nurses to bargain a strong union contract so that we can recruit and retain nurses we need. It’s time for Kaiser to stop prioritizing its bottom line over patients and community. Nurses and patients need and deserve optimal staffing! Thank you.
