Nurses working at the Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch, CA are currently fighting back against the decision to close the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The closest NICU in the area is 40 miles away. Closing this unit would mean jeopardizing the lives of newborn babies while creating huge hardships for families who will need to travel an hour away for vital NICU services.

Closing this NICU during a pandemic is not just wrong, it's heartless. Now more than ever our communities need an increase in measures and resources to help patients during these times, not prioritize profits over patient safety.

On behalf of the critically ill infants, their families, the NICU nurses, physicians, and support staff- we strongly urge Sutter Delta Medical Center to rescind the decision to close the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sutter Delta Medical Center.
 
Nurses, physicians, and support staff provide specialized care and attention to critically ill babies, in other words, a chance to survive. Without the Sutter Delta NICU, the safety of the most vulnerable patients is in jeopardy.

As the global pandemic rages on, it is essential now, more than ever, for families to have a familiar pathway to excellent care, in the most unexpected and challenging health situations they may face in their lifetimes. Asking a frightened family to transfer their baby to facilities over 40 miles away is unacceptable.
 
Additionally, the NICU provides expert support and comfort to families during life-changing difficulties. Providers pride themselves on excellent patient care and keeping families together.  This decision would result in the potential separation of vulnerable infants and their families- resulting in long-term negative health impacts.   
 
This decision by the medical center is short-sighted. It places financial line items and profit over ensuring that these critically ill infants remain alive and healthy.  This medical center should not choose finances over the lives of critically ill infants. Economic decisions on paper have real-life consequences.

We demand that Sutter Delta rescind their decision and seek alternative measures to keep the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit OPEN.
