Tell Gov. Newsom: Rescind dangerous new guidance for nurses and health care workers!

Dear Gov. Newsom,

I am a member of the community who supports our nurses and frontline health care workers, and I am writing today to demand that you direct the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) to rescind recently announced dangerous guidance allowing asymptomatic health care workers who test positive for Covid-19 or who have been exposed to the virus and are asymptomatic to return to work immediately without isolation or testing.

Eliminating the isolation time and sending asymptomatic or exposed health care workers to work will guarantee more preventable transmission, infections, hospitalizations, and death. By doing all this, you and CDPH are in effect guaranteeing more transmission.

On the heels of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration announcing its plan to rescind protections for health care workers codified in its emergency temporary standard on Covid-19 for health care workplaces and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention weakening isolation guidelines for all workers, it is unconscionable that CDPH would strip protections even further.

It is unacceptable that our state’s public health leaders are putting the needs of health care corporations before the safety of patients and workers. We must protect patients and keep nurses and other health care workers healthy and safe on the front lines!

Governor Gavin Newsom’s California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has released new guidance allowing asymptomatic health care workers who test positive for Covid-19 or who have been exposed to the virus and are asymptomatic to return to work immediately — without isolation or testing.

We are in the midst of a record-breaking surge of Covid-19 driven by the Omicron variant. California is running out of hospital beds, and nurses and other health care workers are already reporting extreme levels of moral distress and injury.

This newest attack on the protections on which we all rely will only result in more infections, more hospitalizations, and more deaths. We cannot allow this new guidance to stand. We need you with us now.
