The hospital industry has long engaged in profit-driven policies that result in unsafe staffing levels and poor working conditions. The industry’s ongoing failure to protect the health and safety of nurses and patients during the Covid-19 pandemic is a continuation of these policies.
Hospital employers intentionally understaff hospital units to save money on labor costs and increase profit margins. As a result, nurses are made to care for more patients at one time than is safe, putting both patients and nurses in a dangerous situation. Unsafe staffing levels consistently drive registered nurses to leave bedside nursing jobs, which has led to a national staffing crisis.
To protect patient care and to ensure the ongoing retention of RNs in bedside care jobs, the federal government must adopt enforceable mandatory minimum nurse-to-patient ratios, modeled after the highly successful law that has been in place in California hospitals since 2004.
